FAQ
What is electrolysis?
Electrolysis is the only FDA-recognized method of permanent hair removal. During treatment, a tiny probe is inserted into the natural opening of the hair follicle, and a small amount of energy is applied to permanently disable the follicle’s ability to produce hair. The treated hair is then gently removed with tweezers.
Is electrolysis permanent?
Yes. Electrolysis permanently treats individual hair follicles so they can no longer produce hair.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of treatments needed varies from person to person and depends on several factors, including the treatment area, hair density, previous hair removal methods, hormones, and individual hair growth patterns.
Because hair grows in cycles, permanent hair removal requires multiple treatments over time. During your consultation, we will evaluate your hair growth and provide a personalized treatment plan and a more accurate estimate of what you can expect.
Is electrolysis painful?
Electrolysis can be uncomfortable, and some areas of the body are more sensitive than others. Most clients describe the sensation as a quick sting, pinch, or feeling of heat with each treated hair.
The good news is that treatments are highly individualized. Factors such as the treatment area, hair type, hydration, stress levels, and personal pain tolerance can all affect your experience. Many clients find that treatments become easier over time as the amount of hair decreases.
While electrolysis isn’t always comfortable, many clients find the long-term benefits of permanent hair removal well worth the temporary discomfort.
How should I prepare for my first treatment session?
For your first visit, please allow enough hair growth for us to clearly see the area you would like treated. For most people, about 3–5 days of growth is helpful. Please avoid tweezing, waxing, threading, sugaring, or epilating before your appointment.
Whenever possible, arrive with clean skin free of makeup, lotions, oils, or self-tanner in the treatment area. We’ll review your goals, medical history, and skin needs during your consultation.
Why should I stop tweezing, waxing, threading, or epilating before treatment?
Electrolysis is most effective when the hair is present in the follicle and can be treated at the root.
Tweezing, waxing, threading, sugaring, and epilating remove the hair from the follicle, which can make it harder to treat effectively and may slow your overall progress. Repeated removal from the root can also affect growth patterns over time, making consistency more important.
Shaving and trimming are generally fine because they leave the follicle intact and available for treatment.
How should I prepare for ongoing electrolysis treatments?
Between electrolysis appointments continue to avoid tweezing, waxing, threading, sugaring, or epilating the treatment area. Feel free to shave or trim between sessions. We just need 3-5 days of hair growth for each session.
Staying hydrated, arriving with clean skin, and following your aftercare instructions can also help support healing.
How soon will I see results?
With consistent treatment, you should gradually see less regrowth in the treated area. The timeline depends on factors such as the treatment area, hair density, hormones, previous hair removal methods, and appointment consistency.
Hair grows in cycles, so not every follicle is visible or ready to treat at the same time. Some hairs may also require more than one treatment to fully disable the follicle. During your consultation, we’ll discuss what to expect based on your individual goals and hair growth patterns.
What should I expect after treatment?
Temporary redness, swelling, and tenderness can happen after electrolysis and usually calm with proper aftercare. We’ll review aftercare instructions with you after your appointment so you know how to care for the treated area.
Most clients receive the same core aftercare guidelines, but we may make additional recommendations depending on your skin’s response and the area treated.
How do you keep treatments sanitary?
We follow strict sanitation procedures for every client. Treatment areas and equipment are cleaned and disinfected between appointments, and a new sterile probe is used for each treatment. We are committed to maintaining a clean, professional environment and following industry sanitation best practices.
Can electrolysis treat blonde, red, gray, or white hair?
Yes. Unlike laser hair removal, electrolysis is effective on all hair colors, including blonde, red, gray, and white hairs. Because electrolysis treats each individual hair follicle directly rather than targeting pigment, hair color does not affect its ability to achieve permanent hair removal.
Is electrolysis safe for all skin tones?
Yes. Electrolysis is safe and effective for all skin tones. Electrolysis treats each hair follicle individually rather than targeting pigment in the hair or skin.
Can electrolysis help with PCOS-related hair growth?
Yes. Electrolysis can permanently treat the affected hair follicles regardless of the underlying cause. Many individuals with PCOS experience unwanted facial or body hair due to hormonal imbalances.
While electrolysis permanently removes treated hairs, it does not treat PCOS itself. Because PCOS can continue to stimulate new hair growth over time, some clients may require additional treatments if new hairs become active.
Do you offer gender-affirming hair removal?
Yes. Emmie’s Electrolysis proudly provides gender-affirming hair removal services in a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive environment.
What areas of the body can be treated?
Electrolysis can be performed on virtually any area of the body where unwanted hair grows. Common treatment areas include the face, chin, upper lip, neck, underarms, chest, abdomen, back, arms, legs, bikini area, and more.
